When Do You Find Time To Write?

I've blogged before about the difficulties of finding time to write in the midst of everything else happening in life.

I've always felt like a big phony for dedicating so much time to something that might not pay off in the long run. I sit in front of my computer, feeling guilty about pandering to these people in my head instead of dusting my filmy furniture or vacuuming my family room. I go to work every day in pursuit of a paycheck, because I'm well aware that writing may never earn me one (yes, I still feel this way, even being agented), but all I want to do is write while I'm there.

The week before last, I went to Mexico. I wrote on the plane, I wrote in my hotel room, I wrote on the balcony outside with the sound of the ocean in the background. It was writing Nirvana.
Writing on vacation. Quick, someone go tell my agent how
dedicated I am!

The view from our balcony. Poor me, having to look at that
while I wrote!

Wait... Why did I come home?

The swim-up bar. I recommend the Dirty Monkey.

The pool... The one place where I couldn't write, due to sun glare
on my netbook. And the Dirty Monkeys didn't help, either.

*THEN* something awesome happened when I got home - our system crashed for 3 days at work, and I literally could not do my job. So, I wrote instead.

Unfortunately, it doesn't happen very often that I'm handed writing time on a silver platter like this. But even with all my doubts and demons and obligations, I'm going to find a way. Because it's what I love, plain and simple. (And also, because the idea for book #4 was born while I was in Mexico. Weee!!!)

For more on this subject, (and for a quick live peek at the view from my hotel room) check out my vlog below. And then tell me -  when do you find time to write?

  1. How beautiful! That seriously looks like paradise. I'm glad you had a great time and got a lot of writing done! :)

I have the same doubts about my writing (ie: whether I should be using my writing time on other things like, you know, actually having a social life)...but at this point, I've been sacrificing normal "kid-things" for writing for so long (8 years) that I'm just like: mehhh.

    I'm actually really bad at finding writing time, mostly because whenever life throws me work, I end up doing work and just work (which is why I write like a snail). But I'm slowly learning how to squeeze in writing time (sometimes at odd hours but whatever) and I think I'm getting better at it...or at least, I hope so. ^_^;

    1. I never cared for "normal kid things" either, and I have a hard time ignoring life, too. When I get a good chunk of time to write, I'm thrilled - but then I'm depressed when it's over because I don't know when another one will come around. Such is the life of a writer, I suppose!

I think we need to ditch everything for a while and go back to Mexico for a writer's retreat :)

  2. I don't think I have trouble finding time to write, because god knows I have plenty of time on my hands, usually, but I do procrastinate. A lot. I can only write when I have something else I'm supposed to be doing, you know? Like sleeping. So when I do get a day full of nothing, I do pretty much everything except write. >.<

Also: I am so jealous of you and Mexico and the book baby you made together that I cannot contain it.

  4. So much admiration for your dedication here, because with such views I'm not sure I'd be able to write a single word.

Like Chess, I'm a huge procrastinator. I tend to write when I have other things I should be doing. :)

  5. Wow I'm impressed. I write best late at night, but that is so hard to do now. It was easy before (LOL I was a college student....until I graduated); since May I am trying to look for a job and hopefully then I'll have to schedule writing time in. I really like this post a lot, Gina. (new follower. *waves*)

  6. I write in every spare moment I can. I carry my laptop to the doctor's office every week for my allergy shot. (I have to wait 20 minutes after the shot anyway.) I write on planes and trains, occasionally in the car. And I so totally would have written looking at those beautiful views on your vacation!
